Academic Notice

Academic Separation

Academic Notice

Q: I am now on Academic Notice. Why did this happen?

A: You have been placed on Academic Notice because your Fall 2023 semester GPA and/or cumulative GPA have fallen below the 2.0 GPA minimum GPA requirements.

Academic Notice is a WARNING that you must make significant changes in your way of studying and preparing for your courses. If you earn a 2.0 or higher semester and cumulative GPA at the end of the Spring 2024 semester you will return to good academic standing. If you again earn less than a 2.0 semester AND cumulative GPA at the end of the Spring 2024 semester, you will move to drop status and will not be able to return to Purdue for the Fall 2022 semester.

Academic Notice status may not be appealed. Academic status is a University regulation; academic advisors cannot help if there is an error in your status or grades.

University Regulations – Academic Standards Policy (University Senate Document 21-23, February 21, 2022)

Q:What do I need to do?

A: You will be contacted by your academic advisor to complete the Academic Notice Intervention Process. This process will allow you and your advisor to review your fall semester and identify difficulties you experienced, which negatively affected your grades. This information will then be used to create a plan of action, which may include referrals to campus resources. Your advisor’s goal will be to assist you in returning to good academic standing. It is very important that you complete the probation intervention process and meet with your academic advisor within the first two weeks of the Spring 2024 semester.

Q: I think one of my grades is incorrect and that I should not be in academic notice status. What can I do to get my grade changed?

A: Students who believe they have received an incorrect grade may dispute their grade within 30 days of the start of the subsequent semester (excludes summer session). The deadline to appeal a grade for Fall 2023 is February 7, 2024 by 5:00 pm (EST) Link to Grade Appeals Process  - from Office of the Dean of Students.

Academic Separation

If you are in Academic Separation status you may not return to Purdue for the Spring 2024 semester and should make alternate plans as soon as possible. Separation status may not be appealed.  Consult the Readmission Website for more information.

Q: Why did this happen?

A: Under University regulations, a student on Academic Notice will move to Separation status if their semester and cumulative GPA are below the 2.0 requirement. Students in Separation status cannot return to the University unless they have successfully completed the readmission process. Readmission to Purdue University is not guaranteed and will be based on a student’s academic record at Purdue as well as coursework that must be completed at another institution during the Separation period.

Q: Can I appeal my Separation status?

A: Separation status may not be appealed.

Q: What will I need to do to apply for readmission?

A: Contact the Director of Academic Advising, Lynne Horngren (horngren@purdue.edu), to discuss the possibility of a readmission to the College of Science. Readmission is not guaranteed. A student must complete the readmission process. It is very important that a student thoroughly read the readmission website so they properly complete the process and meet the application deadline for the semester or term they would like the opportunity to return to Purdue.

Q: What will be expected of me?

A:

Important Note: Students are limited to two readmission approvals in the College of Science.  There is no appeal process to this policy. Exception: a student who is within 15 credits of completing their degree requirements will be considered for an additional readmission.

Q: Can my advisor help me in deciding where to go and what classes to take while I’m in separation status?

A: No. Students are expected to complete the readmission process through their own efforts. Many students attend Ivy Tech and take courses, where possible, which are equivalent to Purdue courses. Special Note: The College of Science requires that students take a minimum of 12 credits in one term (six credits must be math/science-based coursework) and earn a B or higher in all courses taken. Courses are required during separation status to confirm a student’s ability to successfully complete a semester of rigorous coursework, not for the purpose of meeting degree requirements.

Q: I think one or my grades is incorrect and that I should not be in separation status. What can I do to get my grade changed?

A: Students who believe they have received an incorrect grade may dispute their grade within 30 days of the start of the subsequent semester (excludes summer session). The deadline to appeal a grade for February 20, 2023 by 5:00 pm (EST).   Faculty will not available until the first day of classes. Link to Grade Appeals Process.
